Really, Dead to Rights: Retribution is a game that wasn’t exactly groundbreaking upon release. For most, it probably lacks the polish and the class of a modern shooter, but the gameplay has enough intrigue to keep you coming back for a bit more. Not many games of the era made your companion a dog, so the addition of Shadow played a huge role in making Dead to Rights: Retribution feel a bit more enjoyable than it actually was. The primary gameplay bonus is Shadow himself. In terms of gameplay, it has a similarity to most shooters of the time – cover, shooting, and taking on what feels like perfectly placed enemies until you reach your main objective. It carries all of the evocative madness of a 90s action movie, with the style very much akin to something you might find in a classic movie like Die Hard. If you like your shooters to come with bombastic action, relatively generic plots, and lots of drama, you’ll have a fun time with Dead to Rights: Retribution. Is Dead to Rights: Retribution, though, something worth playing a decade-plus after its initial release? Die Hard (with a dog) The character and his connection to his beloved dog is a nice touch, too, really helping to elevate the story.
While the plot definitely is a bit on the basic side, writer Ben Fisher has done a fine job on creating a story that can feel worth caring about.
